WALNUT — Michael Norman blasted onto the straight stretch the lead of the 62nd Mt. SAC Relays/Golden Games 200 meters only to get lost in the moment.

“I understand how the race went and what I did wrong,” Norman, the former USC NCAA 400 champion, said. “I kind of got excited and let the race plan leave my mind. I just started racing.

“I got very excited.”

Norman wasn’t alone.

On the meet’s return to the school’s Walnut campus and a renovated Hilmer Lodge Stadium, Norman and Fred Kerley, the two most versatile sprinters of their generation, probably any generation, delivered a race worthy of both its pre-race build-up and the occasion.

Kerley, the Olympic 100-meter silver medalist, powered past Norman late for the victory, clocking a world leading 19.80 seconds. Norman was just three-hundreths back, with his former USC teammate and roommate Rai Benjamin, the Olympic 400 hurdles silver medalist, third at 20.01.

“I got the ‘W.’” Kerley said.

The real winner Saturday, however, might have been the sport. As the planet turns its attention to the U.S. and the World Championships in Eugene later this summer, the emerging Norman-Kerley rivalry couldn’t come at a more opportune for a sport looking for transcendent stars in the post-Usain Bolt era.

“It’s good,” Norman said. “Keeps the sport super competitive. Keeps it unpredictable. You never know who’s going to come out on top at the end of the day.

“You have to have rivalry in track and field,” Kerley said. “We come out to compete, that’s what we do best.”

The question is what do they do best? Much of the appeal and the intrigue of the rivalry comes from Kerley and Norman’s unprecedented range. Both had run 9.86 in the 100, with Norman’s 200 and 400 personal bests (19.70, 43.45) only slightly faster than Kerley’s (19.76, 43.64). Kerley began the afternoon already ranked third in the world in the 100 in 2022, and leading the planet in the 200 and 400.

“Knowing someone is trying to do something similar just brings out the best in us,” Norman said.

Whether they square off at Worlds and a city that calls itself Tracktown USA remains to be seen.

Both Kerley and Norman have been tightlipped about which events they enter at the U.S. Championships in Eugene in June.

“We’ll see,” Norman said Saturday.

“You’ll have to wait and see,” Kerley said.

At least while track fans are waiting they can find comfort in a Norman pledge.

“There will be plenty more races down the road,” he said.

Kerley’s victory was one of four world leading marks Saturday.

Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah, winner of the 100 and 200 at the last two Olympic Games, won her 100 heat in a world leading in 10.89, but did not start the final. Meet officials did not know the reason for Thompson-Herah’s scratch.

Michael Cherry took the 400 in a world best 44.28.

Sam Houston Stare’s Clayton Fritsch won the pole vault in a world outdoor best 19-0 1/4.

New Balance’s Gabby Thomas just missed a fifth world leading mark, winning the 200 in 22.02, just off the season’s top mark of 21.96 run by LSU’s Ofili Favour Friday night in Gainesville, Florida. Thomas’ clocking, however, came just 24 minutes after she ran a wind-aided 10.86 for third in the 100 behind Twanisha Terry’s 10.77 win.

But Saturday’s most dominant performance belonged to Olympic discus champion Valarie Allman, who marked her Mt. SAC Relays debut with a meet record 227-feet, 10-inch victory.

“I was so excited to make it out to the Mt SAC Relays,” Allman said. “It’s been one of the meets ever since I got into the sport that I’ve really been excited to compete in. I’ve heard stories about the wind but also the incredibly rich history of amazing performances across the events and I wanted to be part of it. The crowd, the environment were amazing.”

Now that she’s checked Mt. SAC off, Allman can now take aim at an even bigger item on her to-do list: land the longest, clean throw in history.

The emphasis on clean.

“We’re chasing that big one,” Allman said. “It’s one thing to want it. And it’s another thing to know what to do and I think I’m starting to get that spot of figuring out how do I reach my potential in the moment. And it’s exciting. It’s a journey.

Just what that mark is, is up for debate.

Allman could very well already own history’s longest clean throw, after unleashing an American record 234-feet, 5 1/4 inch blast April 8 in La Jolla. It was the world’s best mark in 30 years. Yet it only placed the former Stanford standout 15th on the all-time list.

Ten of the 14 throwers ahead of Allman on the all-time list are from either the former East Germany or the Soviet Union. The other four are from Eastern bloc countries or China. Thirteen of the top 14 made their marks between 1980 and 1988, an era ripe with state supported systemic doping programs in Soviet bloc countries. The other top 14 mark came in 1992. East German Gabriele Reinsch’s world record of 251-11 has stood since 1988.

“The problem is the world record is 76.80 (meters) from obviously an era that’s you know, there’s obviously there’s some fair opinions on how that was achieved,” Zeb Sion, Allman’s coach, said when asked if she could challenge the official world record. “So I’m not sure yet. A lot of people have asked me about that and my answer is I believe she’ll end up throwing a distance where everybody unanimously agrees is the clean world record.

“That’s the problem. Her mark last week I believe is 15th on the all-time global list. That’s a joke, unfortunately. It’s hard to really put into words. It is tough because she is obviously better than 15th. That’s just a fact. We’re doing it differently. We’re trying to be consistent. Trying to elevate the current landscape of women’s discus in the world is kind of the goal. So we’ll see how it plays out.”
