Dave Roberts still mulling Dodgers’ rotation order

LOS ANGELES — With Opening Day a mere four days away, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he still has not committed to his rotation order beyond No. 1 starter Walker Buehler.

Even with Julio Urias starting Monday’s Freeway Series game, one day after Buehler started in Anaheim, Roberts was not ready to say if the left-hander would be on the mound for the second game of the regular season on Saturday in Colorado.

“I think we’re set as far as the five guys that are going to start (the first) five games, I just don’t know what order,” Roberts said. “… As far as two, three, four and five, I just don’t see where we’re going to be with that.”

Roberts did clarify that Andrew Heaney would not pitch against Colorado, which means the left-hander would make his Dodgers debut on April 12 or 13 in Minnesota. Also left to decide, other than Urias’ spot, is where right-hander Tony Gonsolin and left-hander Clayton Kershaw would fall in the rotation order.

With not much left for any of the starters to prove, as the exhibition season comes to a close on Tuesday, Roberts was asked if any nagging injuries are delaying his decision.

“No, it’s more matchup-based and looking at the Rockies series, looking out beyond that,” Roberts said. “More importantly, how guys come out of (Monday night). We have Julio going and Tony piggybacking.”

Another consideration could be weather. High temperatures near 70 degrees are projected in Denver for the weekend, with overnight lows in the 40s. In Minneapolis next week, daytime temperatures are expected to be in the 50s, with nighttime lows in the 40s.

READY FOR FREDDIE

Free-agent addition Freddie Freeman was back with the Dodgers on Monday and in the designated hitter spot after missing Sunday’s game in Anaheim with what was considered a 24-hour bug.

Dodgers fans showed their appreciation with the loudest cheer during player introductions and more cheers before his first at-bat. The volume only increased on Freeman’s slicing triple to the left field wall that fooled the Angels’ Jo Adell.

INCOMING CALL

Roberts called Edwin Rios to let him know he had made the Opening Day roster after the infielder missed most of last season because of a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder.

“I called him when he was with his wife at the house and he was really excited,” Roberts said. “He’s earned it.”

Rios, who could see time at DH against right-handed pitching, hit three home runs in 21 at-bats and took a 1.271 spring OPS into Monday’s game. He has 13 career regular-season home runs in 174 at-bats but has never played more than 32 games in a single season.

FINAL TUNE-UPS

A number of Dodgers pitchers threw to hitters before Monday’s game to get in some of their last work of the spring. Among those throwing from the Dodger Stadium mound before the gates opened were left-hander Tyler Anderson, as well as right-handers Evan Phillips and Blake Treinen.

Anderson, who is expected to open the season as the long man in the bullpen, pitched five simulated innings. Heaney also threw a bullpen session from the main mound.

“I think it was more of just running out of game innings and putting these guys in front of hitters to give the live action,” Roberts said.
