When Billie Eilish took the stage for her Saturday night headlining set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, she seemed stunned that she was topping the bill.

After all, three years ago, Coachella basically minted her as a breakout star with a massively popular set at the Outdoor Theatre.

Obviously, in the years since, Eilish has become a global superstar and her die-hard fans had an intense sing (and sometimes scream) along Saturday night. She also brought out Khalid and Blur’s Damon Albarn.

But Billie’s fans weren’t the only ones screaming. Emo Nite let those of us who spent plenty of time screaming and dancing along to My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy relive our youth with a Sahara Tent set in the afternoon, but not everyone at home was impressed.

However, one of the other early acts was dressed to impress. L’Impératrice, a French disco outfit, wore Pierre Cardin and had a tent full of people bringing back the good times of Coachella with plenty of booty shaking.

Back to the music, Danny Elfman delivered a wonderfully weird and delightful set of his film and TV music, plus solo work and Oingo Boingo classics.

And 88rising, the music collective behind the Head in the Clouds Festival, had a showcase on the main stage in the evening that saw the reunion of K-pop icons 2NE1.

Coachella isn’t just about the headliners, though. It’s called the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for a reason. This year’s large-scale art installations were actually in the works for the 2020 festival that never happened. However, the pandemic made the messages behind some of them all the more poignant.
