Cecilia Iglesias for Orange County supervisor: Endorsement

Rent Computer Hardware You Need, When You Need It

There are several qualified candidates running to represent the majority-Latino Second District of the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

Cecilia Iglesias is the best choice of the bunch, with her long record of speaking truth to power.

Three years ago, as a councilwoman in Santa Ana, Iglesias dared to stand up for local taxpayers and voted against a costly new contract for the Santa Ana police union. She also called for a civilian police- oversight commission.

For this, she was punished with a recall campaign waged by the Santa Ana Police Officers Association.

The Orange County Democratic Party shamefully joined in on this disgraceful campaign and smeared Iglesias, an immigrant from El Salvador, as a “Latina Trump.”

She was successfully removed from office, a testament to the destructive power of the police unions. Then-Santa Ana Councilman and now Mayor Vicente Sarmiento, who is also running for supervisor, voted in support of the contract.

Prior to her time as a member of the Santa Ana City Council, she served on the Santa Ana Unified School Board, where she likewise stood up for fiscal responsibility and school choice, championing the “parent trigger” law to allow parents to oust school administrators of underperforming schools.Iglesias vows to bring this same commitment to fiscal responsibility and reform to the Board of Supervisors.

Let’s put an end to the politics of virtue signaling

To maintain independence, Iglesias vows to never accept public employee union money.

In addition to being a reliable fiscal hawk, Iglesias recognizes the need for the county to invest in mental health and drug rehabilitation services and would like to see services expanded.

She also maintains a balanced approach to policing. “We need to ensure that our officers have the resources and tools they need to do their jobs,” she told us, but at the same time “hold them accountable” for misconduct. Iglesias also recognizes the need for more transparency in county government, moving meetings to better times and doing more to encourage public participation through oversight boards.

Accordingly, we endorse Cecilia Iglesias.
