Brian Girard has resigned as the boys basketball coach at Garden Grove.

The Argonauts won the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA championship on Feb. 25, the first CIF boys basketball championship in the school’s 101-year history. Girard was named Division 5AA coach of the year.

He was Garden Grove’s varsity coach for three seasons after many years as a varsity assistant and lower levels head coach.

Girard, 41, said he resigned to spend more time with his family that includes three sons, ages 13, 6 and 3.

“They’re getting at that age where I need to spend more time with them,” said Girard, who also said that months ago he was contemplating making this season his last as head coach.

Garden Grove athletic director Ralph Stevens said assistant coach Andy Scimeca will replace Girard. Scimeca is a teacher at Garden Grove High.
