Amazon Fresh opened its doors Thursday in Mission Viejo, bringing its “Just Walk Out” technology to south Orange County.
The 35,000-square-foot grocery store took the place of a former Office Max at 26940 Crown Valley Parkway.
Amazon, which acquired Whole Foods in 2017, has been opening grocery stores across Southern California, with its first Fresh location debuting in late 2020 in Woodland Hills. The Fresh and Whole Foods locations have enabled the e-commerce titan to also deliver same-day grocery orders to Amazon subscribers.
The company’s Just Walk Out technology means shoppers can skip the traditional checkout lane and opt for a “virtual” cart instead. Amazon account holders walk in, scan a credit card (or their palm print) linked to their account, select their goods, and then scan again as they walk out. (Alcohol sales go through a separate process.)
The technology works with the help of hundreds of cameras, weight gauges and scanners that monitor what a customer removes from shelves and puts into their carts.
Customers, including those who are non-Amazon members, also can choose to use a traditional checkout lane.

Amazon is in the process of opening six new Fresh stores in Southern California. Other stores opening in upcoming days include one in La Verne (April 28) and another in Murrieta (May 5). Fresh stores are also coming to Huntington Beach, Westlake Village and Moorpark.
The Moorpark and Murrieta stores are the first for Ventura and Riverside counties, respectively.
Amazon Fresh offers much of what traditional grocery stores stock, including produce, meats, pantry goods, household supplies and prepared food such as pizza and sushi. Customers can expect a mix of national brands and Amazon’s store brand.
The company has 11 Fresh locations in the region. In addition to the Mission Viejo store, it has locations in Cerritos, Fullerton, Irvine, Ladera Heights, La Habra, Long Beach, Northridge, North Hollywood, Whittier and Woodland Hills.

Amazon Fresh accepts cash, SNAP/EBT, credit or debit card, or customers can use an in-store QR code in the Amazon app.
