An 18-year-old was killed when two Century High School students were shot while sitting in a parked car in Santa Ana on Thursday evening.

The car was in an alley at 1400 S. Minnie Street when someone approached it and fired several rounds at the occupants, said Sgt. Maria Lopez, a spokeswoman for the Santa Ana Police Department. Officers found the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper torsos.

They were taken to a hospital, where one victim died from his injuries. He was identified as Roberto Izelo, 18, of Tustin.

The other victim, a 19-year-old man and Izelo’s cousin, was recovering in the hospital on Friday.

Both victims were students at Century High School in Santa Ana, and played on the school’s baseball team. They had just finished a game before the shooting occurred, Lopez said.

“We believe the suspect approached the vehicle and fired multiple rounds, striking two of the three occupants before fleeing on foot,” she said.

A third person — a 16-year-old boy— was found uninjured in the back seat of the vehicle, Lopez said. It was not clear if he was a student at Century High School.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not available on Friday, but police were investigating it as possibly gang-related, Lopez said.

Video surveillance footage released by police  of the possible suspect showed a man in all black walking through a nearby parking lot.

Crisis counselors were available on campus Friday for students and staff, according to the Santa Ana Unified School District.
