Sydney Somerndike fired a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Kalia Espere hit a home run as Villa Park’s softball team defeated Murrieta Mesa 3-1 to capture the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions for first time in Bullhead City, Ariz. on Saturday.
Claire Duckworth also had a double in the final for the Spartans (11-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County and CIF-SS Division 1.
Villa Park beat Whittier Christian 7-1 in the semifinals behind the Arizona-bound Somerndike, who pitched five strong innings and went 2 for 4 with an RBI double.
Murrieta Mesa also reached its first final at the prestigious tournament.
Senior Jaelynn Eaves homered in the fifth inning for the Rams’ lone run.
Junior Caylea Rains-Campbell allowed four hits and struck out three for Murrieta Mesa.
In the semifinals, the Rams defeated Los Alamitos.
