A building at UC Irvine was evacuated and a woman was taken to a local burn center after an unknown chemical spilled, prompting a hazmat response Friday afternoon, March 11, authorities said.
Orange County firefighters responded just before 2 p.m. to the 800 block of Medical Plaza Drive, Captain Brett Buffington said.
Medical Surge 1, a building on the outskirts of the main campus where the Health Sciences buildings are located, was evacuated, according to a tweet from campus police.
What kind of chemical spilled was unknown and a hazmat team was preparing to make entry into the building, Buffington said.
Further details, including how many people evacuated and how many rooms in the building may have been affected, were not immediately known.
