Steve Fryer’s list of outstanding baseball players last week:
Zach Brown, Villa Park, Jr., P/Inf: He pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the Spartans’ 5-0 win over Yorba Linda. Brown is 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA. He has 18 strikeouts with two walks in 15 2/3 innings.
Bobby Gray, Trabuco Hills, Jr., Inf: He homered and drove in two runs for the Mustangs in a 7-4 win over Edison. Gray was All-Sea View League first team last season as Trabuco Hills won the league championship.
Ethan Hedges, Mater Dei, Sr., P: Hedges was named Most Valuable Pitcher of the Perfect Game West Coast Classic Showdown in which Mater Dei and Santa Margarita were co-champions of the tournament’s pool-play format. Hedges, who signed with USC, pitched six innings of no-hit ball with nine strikeouts in the Monarchs’ 3-0 win over Red Mountain of Mesa, Ariz.
JJ Hollis, JSerra, Jr., P: He gave up two hits in the first inning before keeping Orange Lutheran hitless the rest of the way in the Lions’ 2-1 win over the Lancers, the No. 1 team in Orange County and in the state. Hollis had seven strikeouts with three walks.
Luke Lavin, Santa Margarita, Jr., C: He was named Most Valuable Player of the Perfect Game West Coast Classic Showdown tournament played at The Great Park in Irvine. Lavin, who committed to Stanford, was 8 for 13 at the plate and hit for the cycle in a 10-0 win over Poudre of Fort Collins, Colo. Santa Margarita and Mater Dei were named co-champions of the tournament’s pool-play format.
