Gelson’s Markets is looking to fill hundreds of jobs in a variety of roles at all 27 of its Southern California grocery stores.

The Encino-based company will host job fairs at all of its grocery stores from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 6.

Available roles include chef, dishwasher, deli counter, kitchen manager, kitchen counter, assistant manager, baker, checkers, clerk helpers, positions in floral, meat, general groceries, maintenance and more.

Gelson’s offers employee discounts, union pay rates, benefits and retirement plans, paid vacations, flexible scheduling, weekly pay, scholarships and tuition reimbursement programs.

The upscale grocery store was acquired by Pan Pacific International Holdings, the parent company of Marukai Corp. and Tokyo Central, in 2021. Terms of the deal with TPG Capital in San Francisco — announced Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021 — were not disclosed.

PPIH was founded over 40 years ago by Takao Yasuda, one of Japan’s wealthiest entrepreneurs worth an estimated $4 billion. The publicly-traded company operates 638 stores with 582 of them in Japan. It’s known for the popular Don Quijote brand in Hawaii and Japan.

April job fair offers veterans priority arrival

A job fair at the Discovery Cube from 10-2 p.m. April 21 will give veterans a priority spot in line.

The event, hosted by the Orange County Workforce Development Board, the city of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Work Center, will include 100 employers. (Those employers had yet to be revealed at press time.)

Veterans can enter at 10 a.m. and general admission begins at 10:30 a.m. Applicants should dress to impress and bring several copies of a current resume, the hosts said.

Black Engineers expo begins March 24

The National Society of Black Engineers will hold its first in-person organization-wide gathering since 2019 in Anaheim March 24–27. NSBE’s convention will be conducted both in-person and virtually, to optimize attendees’ safety with regard to COVID-19.

The theme of #NSBE48 is about inspiring engineers “to lead … and pave the way for the next generation of leaders and motivate aspiring engineers in college to find their place in the industry.”

Attendees will include members of 600-plus chapters in the U.S. and abroad.

Darren O. Aitken, a San Juan Capistrano resident and managing partner of the law firm Aitken Aitken Cohn, has been named to the board of directors of the Mission Preservation Foundation. The foundation raises money for the care and preservation of Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Fundraising golf tournament is April 25

The clothing retailer Tilly’s will host its annual golf tournament April 25 at Mission Viejo Country Club.

This year’s theme for the charity golf tournament is ‘Tillyana Jones’ and will benefit Tilly’s Life Center, a nonprofit educational program that helps teens overcome the obstacles they are met with on a daily basis.

The 18-hole, shotgun-style/scramble tournament format begins at 8 a.m. and includes food, beverages, prizes, swag and more.

Some of the events include a putting contest, chipping contest, ‘straightest drive’ contest, golf-ball launcher. There are also many other ways to help and support this event including sponsorship and underwriting opportunities, as well as monetary donations.

Appointments

Westminster resident Jolena Grande, 50, has been reappointed to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, where she has served since 2018. She’s been a licensed embalmer and crematory manager at Service Corporation International at Riverside Care Center since 2009. She has held several positions at the Cypress College, Mortuary Science Program since 1999, including adjunct instructor, professor and program Director. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Grande is a Democrat.
