THE GAME: The Angels surrendered a late three-run lead in a 5-5 tie against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday afternoon at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz.
PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Janson Junk allowed one run in three innings. Junk, who is a candidate for the Angels’ No. 6 starter job, has allowed three runs in five innings this spring. “He’s been able to throw a variety of different pitches,” Manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s got great makeup. He could keep both sides of the plate off balance. He’s going to keep getting better at what he does.” … Right-hander Jaime Barria allowed three runs in three innings, two on a 411-foot homer by Seth Beer in the eighth inning. Barria is in the running for the rotation spot, with Junk and Reid Detmers, but Barria is out of options, so he’ll likely be in the bullpen if he’s not in the rotation. … Right-hander Raisel Iglesias worked a scoreless inning on 12 pitches, striking out two. … Left-hander José Quijada struck out one and gave up a solo homer.
HITTING REPORT: Taylor Ward drove in a run with a single and drew a walk. Ward is hitting .313 with a 1.077 OPS this spring. … Tyler Wade drew two walks. He is hitting .385 with a .500 on-base percentage this spring. Wade is likely on the team because he’s out of options, but he is fighting for a starting spot in the middle infield with David Fletcher. … Michael Stefanic lined an RBI double into left field and also singled. Stefanic also had one of the Angels’ three stolen bases in the game. Stefanic, a non-roster invite to camp, is hitting .385 this spring. … Ryan Aguilar, who is up from minor league camp, hit a homer. Aguilar, 27, had been in the Brewers organization until this season, peaking at Double-A.
DEFENSE REPORT: Wade, who was playing shortstop, made a sliding catch of a line drive up the middle. … Catcher Kurt Suzuki played his first game of the spring, working four innings behind the plate. … Junk made a low throw to first baseman Jared Walsh, who couldn’t make the play. Junk was charged with an error.
