The good news for a bunch of people who worked on “Dune” is that the sci-fi epic earned four Academy Awards before the show even started.
That’s the bad news, too.
In perhaps the most controversial change to the 94th Academy Awards, a number of the craft Oscars were moved to a pre-show, and handed out while the splashiest stars, directors, and producers were still walking the red carpet.
“Dune” earned Oscars in the limbo before the show for Hans Zimmer, for best original score and Joe Walker, for best film editing.
The film also grabbed best production design for production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos, and best sound for Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” which stars Jessica Chastain as televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, won best makeup and hairstyling for a team made up of Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram and Justin Raleigh.
“The Windshield Wiper,” by Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sanchez, won the Oscar for best animated short feature for its somewhat adult-themed story.
Best documentary short when the Ben Proudfoot for “The Queen of Basketball,” a portrait of early women’s basketball star Luisa Harris. NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Stephen Curry, as executive producers, also get a piece of this win.
Actor Riz Ahmed, a best actor nominee in 2021 for “The Sound of Metal,” and Aneil Karia won the Oscar for best live action short.
