Miguel Ortega, John McFadden, Mark Reichner are CIF boys basketball players of the year

John McFadden and Mark Reichner of San Juan Hills and Miguel Ortega of Garden Grove are CIF Southern Section boys basketball players of the year, the CIF-SS office announced Monday.

McFadden and Reichner, seniors, were named CIF-SS Division 2A Co-Players of the Year. They led San Juan Hills to the 2A championship. Jason Efstathiou of San Juan Hills is the 2A coach of the year.

Ortega is the player of the year in Division 4AA. Garden Grove won the 4AA championship. Garden Grove’s Brian Girard is the 4AA coach of the year.

La Quinta’s Mark Sanchez is the coach of the year in CIF-SS 5A. He guided La Quinta to the 5A semifinals.

Players from CIF-SS champions usually are selected for the player of the year honors. That happened this season in every CIF-SS division except one, Division 4A. Western won the 4A championship, but Valley Torah’s Johnny Dan is the 4A player of the year.

Western’s representative on the All-CIF Division 4A team is senior Ahmad Hammouri.
