Mater Dei’s girls and Fountain Valley’s boys won close duels Saturday en route to team titles at the Capistrano Valley Relays, the first major Orange County swimming meet of the season.

The Monarchs’ girls scored 238 points to edge runner-up Tesoro by eight points to claim their first championship since 2019.

Fountain Valley’s boys held off Tesoro 248-242 to take their first team title in recent memory.

The meet wasn’t held last spring because of the pandemic.

Mater Dei’s girls captured one relay — the 4×50-yard breaststroke — and used their depth to outscore Tesoro, which won two races.

Defending champion Santa Margarita claimed three races, including one in a meet record, en route to 210 points.

The Monarchs’ 200 breaststroke relay of Alexa Chandler, Makenna Wright, Jessica Reagan and Megan Chaput clocked a winning time of 2 minutes, 11.46 seconds. Chandler, a freshman, led off the relay with a lifetime-best time of 31.38 seconds, an encouraging sign for her 100 breast.

Mater Dei also closed the meet well by placing second in the 400 free (3:45.90) and 200 medley (1:54.24) to Santa Margarita. The Eagles won both races in 3:36.77 and 1:51.44, respectively.

Santa Margarita’s 4×100 individual medley of Macky Hodges, Isabella Abrajan, Asia Kozan and Justina Kozan shattered the meet record by just over six seconds with a 3:47.06. All four swimmers broke 59 seconds with the USC-bound Justina Kozan splitting her anchor in a sizzling 55.62.

Fountain Valley won four of the seven boys races.

The Barons sealed the title winning the medley relay in 1:39.87, about 1.5 seconds ahead of second-place Tesoro (1:41.39).

The winning team consisted of Justin Chen, Tyler Vuong, Benjamin Pham and Sean Kemick.

The Barons also produced a strong performance in the 200 breaststroke with a winning time 1:53.20. The team featured Bryce Leach, Ranen Herman, Goten Huynh and Vuong.

Tesoro’s Anders Aistars, a Harvard-bound senior, led off the 300 free relay with a swift 20.95 to send the Titans to a narrow win against Portola with a 2:16.64. He also led off the 400 free relay in 45.06 seconds.

The Bulldogs’ boys placed third in the team race with 234 points.
