A Torrance man suspected of being the “Green Gaiter Bandit” and accused of robbing several banks in Los Angeles and Orange counties was arrested, the FBI announced Tuesday.
Christopher Paul Daniels, 55, was arrested on Sunday, Feb. 27, in Palos Verdes Estates and charged in a criminal complaint, authorities said. The complaint charges Daniels with bank robberies or attempted bank robberies at:
U.S. Bank in Mission Viejo on Jan. 7
Wells Fargo Bank in Placentia on Jan. 21
Chase Bank in Fullerton on Jan. 21
Bank of the West in Fullerton on Jan. 27
Since October 2021 to as recent as Jan. 27, 2022, there were 19 bank robberies or attempted robberies involving a suspect described as a white male, between 50 and 60 years old, entering various banks and demanding cash or loose bills, according to authorities. The suspected Green Gaiter Bandit has been linked to at least 12 of the robberies committed during that time, the FBI said in a news release.
The suspect wore a green camouflage gaiter covering part of his face during some of robberies, according to the FBI. The nickname “Green Gaiter Bandit” was ascribed to the case to keep track of the numerous crimes in multiple cities.
The additional seven robberies were committed by at least one additional suspect, described as a male, in Fullerton, Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in an email.
Authorities are also investigating five robberies or attempted robberies that occurred on Feb. 22 and 23 in Santa Fe Springs, Downey, Whittier, Gardena and Bellflower believed to be committed by the suspected Green Gaiter Bandit, the FBI said.
