The United Laguna Woods Mutual board is appointing Director Cash Achrekar to an insurance ad hoc committee formed this month by the Golden Rain Foundation.

Director Diane Casey is to serve as an alternate.

GRF formed the committee with the purpose of researching and evaluating risk management alternatives for insurance coverage in Laguna Woods Village.

“This is a research group that may find the best possible solutions that could benefit United,” Village Management Services CEO Siobhan Foster said.

GRF and the mutuals are combining their efforts to solve what is collectively referred to as “the insurance issue,” which has already cost United $250,000 and Third $175,000 in brokerage fees, said United President Anthony Liberatore.

The formation of the committee is subject to ratification in April, when United Mutual committee appointments are updated.

“We’re not talking about one insurance policy,” Liberatore said. “We’re talking about researching the insurance industry.”

The United board unanimously approved the resolution making the appointment, 11-0-0, at its March 8 meeting. The resolution must now wait for ratification by the board in April.

COVID-19 update

The drop continues for COVID-19 numbers across the board.

Public health officials reported a daily case rate of 5.7 new cases per 100,000 residents across Orange County as of Tuesday, March 15.

Only a few additional cases have been recorded recently in the city of Laguna Woods, making for 1,048 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday. Cumulatively, there have been at least 73 deaths.

The rate at which tests for the coronavirus are coming back positive, the testing positivity rate, has fallen in the county to 2.6%. The health equity rate – the test positivity of disproportionately impacted neighborhoods – follows at 3%.

“It seems that this COVID thing is dying off,” Liberatore said, noting that improvements may bring next month’s meeting fully back into the board room. “I will keep in touch with the staff, who keep in touch with the state.”

Resale report

The average resale price for a co-op in United Mutual in February was $296,610, up from $263,331 in February 2021, according to a VMS staff report. Resales year-to-date numbered 78, up from 61 the same time last year. Sales volume in February was $12 million compared with $7 million in February 2021.
