A new public library is in the works in Laguna Woods that will offer greatly expanded space for new technology, a large variety of books, DVDs and other materials, and programs such as book clubs, crafting and genealogy, while providing a place for people to work, study and read.
The library is a branch of the Orange County Public Library system. Construction began in December in front of Laguna Woods City Hall on El Toro Road.
During the pandemic, the existing Laguna Woods Library – essentially counter space inside the City Hall building – was too small to accommodate the new health restrictions and guidelines.
“OCPL is very excited about the new library,” said County Librarian Julie Quillman. “The current space is really just a counter, so this will give our patrons a full library experience.”
The new building will be 1,734 square feet, with 573 square feet of patio space partially covered with a roof, and outdoor space connecting the library with City Hall.
As part of the Orange County Public Library system, the new library will be able to offer resources from libraries throughout the system. OCPL card holders have access to as many as 1.6 million items, including books, DVDs, CDs and more. The new library also will offer computers, printers and Wi-Fi access. All services will be free.
The library also will be able to accommodate book clubs and programs such as crafting, knitting, genealogy, travel and gardening.
Part of the funding of the library came with the help of Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris: The city was able to secure a $500,000 state of California grant toward the project.
Members of the public – individuals, clubs and businesses – can donate to the construction of the library through the Laguna Woods Civic Support Fund and have their names added to a founders wall. See the city of Laguna Woods website for more information.
Construction of the library is expected to be completed this summer.
“We look forward to expanding service and programs at the Laguna Woods Library,” Quillman said.
