Fryer: Three-sport stars are alive and well in Orange County high school athletics

The three-sport athlete still exists.

Crean Lutheran senior Jack Fairchild was the top receiver on the school’s football team in the fall. He is a key reserve on its basketball team that plays Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the Southern California Regional Division I semifinals Saturday. In a track and field tri-meet last month, Fairchild logged personal bests in the 100 meters (11.88 seconds) and 110-meter hurdles (15.34).

Senior Tyler Hampton was the second-leading receiver for Edison’s football team this past season. He is a starter on the Chargers’ basketball team that plays Los Altos in the Southern California Division II regional semifinals Saturday. Hampton was the CIF-SS Division 2 champion in the high jump last season with a clearance of 6 feet, 4 inches.

Trabuco Hills junior Will Burns was the starting quarterback for the Mustangs football team in the fall. He competes in two spring sports, baseball and track and field. He’s a standout shortstop for the baseball team and he competes in the 100 and the long jump for the track team.

Orange County has other multi-sport stars. What they all have in common is, they are having the most fun their high school sports years can provide, and in 20 years they won’t look back on their high school sports days and regrettably say to themselves, “I wish I also would have played … “

NOTES

• It might seem odd that teams that lost in CIF-SS basketball semifinals are invited to the CIF State playoffs and given spots in the Southern California Regional. But the success of La Quinta, Foothill and Edison — all of which lost in the CIF-SS semifinals but playing Saturday in regional semifinals — shows that such teams belong in the state playoffs. Foothill was seeded No. 1 in Division II of the SoCal Regional because state basketball seeding criteria evaluated Foothill’s accomplishments as worthy of being seeded No. 1.

• Mater Dei’s boys basketball team had a good season, considering the Monarchs lacked the kind of talent they have most seasons. They went 10-0 in the Trinity League, 1-2 in pool play in the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs, and were the only county team selected for the CIF State Open Division playoffs.

• Crean Lutheran’s 6-10 forward, Koat Keat, did not play Thursday when the Saints beat La Costa Canyon 68-50 in the second round of the Division I regional. He contributed as a water-bottle provider during  timeouts. If the swelling and soreness in his right knee has subsided enough, Keat could play Saturday night — and be big a difference maker — against visiting Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the Division I semifinal.

• The biggest surprise of the CIF regional basketball playoffs is La Quinta’s boys team. The Aztecs finished second in the Garden Grove League, advanced to the CIF-SS Division 5A semifinals, and now are playing in the Division V regional semifinals against Fontana on Saturday night. La Quinta is the underdog, which is nothing new.

• John Morris resigned this week as basketball coach at Servite, a position he held for 12 seasons. Morris, who always got the most out of his roster while playing in the ultra-tough Trinity League, stepped down to create time for other pursuits, including life in general. The Friars advanced to the CIF-SS quarterfinals three times and the semifinals once during his tenure.

• Marina’s boys basketball team had five players finish the season with double-figure scoring averages: Eric Hodgkins (14 points a game), Robert Aguirre (13), Bohdi Armstrong (11), Kenji Duremdes (11) and Kylle Magdangal (10).

• Spectrum News 1 will televise the CIF Southern California Open Division boys basketball regional semifinal between Sierra Canyon and  Harvard-Westlake on Saturday at 6 p.m.

• Capistrano Valley girls wrestler Neila Fritts capped a great senior season by winning the CIF State championship at 235 pounds. She was the only girls wrestler from Orange County to leave Bakersfield with a state title. In the state final, she defeated Elk Grove senior Annika Miles, who was undefeated at the time and ranked No. 4 in the nation.

• Estancia’s baseball team entered Friday with a 9-0 record. Trevor Scott pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts Thursday in the Eagles’ 6-0 win over Fairmont Prep.

• Orange Lutheran’s hockey team won a third consecutive California state championship last weekend.

• The Huntington Beach Classic track and field meet Saturday should produce good marks. Teams in it include Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita.

• Next week’s boys volleyball schedule features Servite at Newport Harbor on Tuesday and Huntington Beach at Newport Harbor on Thursday. Huntington Beach defeated Newport Harbor in a tournament last month.

• Saddleback will have an on-campus football stadium in the 2022 season. The Roadrunners have played most of their home games in recent years at Segerstrom. The other Santa Ana public schools with on-campus football stadiums are Century and Valley.

• Several Orange County football players will participate in the Under Armour Next Football Camp Series that stops at Mission Viejo High this weekend. Among the county players in it are Los Alamitos quarterback Malachi Nelson and his Griffins teammates Makai Lemon and Denadre Moore Jr., both receivers. Mater Dei linebacker Leviticus Su’a also is in the camp.
