PEORIA, Ariz. — The Seattle Mariners scored five times in the first inning and the Dodgers never caught up, losing 7-6 at Peoria Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
PITCHING REPORT: Ryan Pepiot had a bad day. The pitching prospect gave up five runs in the first inning, including four on a grand slam by former Dodger Steven Souza Jr. Pepiot gave up another run in the second inning. Pepiot faced 14 batters, allowed four hits, walked three and hit a batter. “It’s one of those things where he just couldn’t command the baseball,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He was frustrated – which he should be. But like I told him, it’s part of the process.” … Yefry Ramirez and Victor Gonzalez combined for three scoreless innings. Gonzalez struck out two of the three batters he faced.
HITTING REPORT: Trea Turner and Cody Bellinger each went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. … Chris Taylor and Gavin Lux drove in runs with sacrifice flies. Austin Barnes drove in one with an infield single. … Eddy Alvarez and Jason Martin hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning. Martin is 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs to start the spring.
DEFENSE REPORT: Jacob Amaya entered the game at shortstop in the fifth inning and made a pair of nice plays, first on a hard ground ball to his right and later on a chopper on the grass. … Barnes threw out Mariners second baseman Dylan Moore trying to steal second base in the fourth inning. It was the first steal attempt of the spring against the Dodgers.
