Bubble artist Melody Yang has done many shows in the past for Discovery Cube Orange County’s annual event featuring soapy fun for kids, but the show that debuted Wednesday, Marcy 30, is a bit different.

Yang, who usually does the laser show as her brother handles most of the bubble tricks, is doing Bubblefest solo this time around, and she is taking over the production as a new mom.

Yang’s son was born in 2021.

“It’s changed my perspective on a lot of things, and it will change the way I interact with the kids,” Yang said.

In the past, Yang would do an interlude with bubbles in which children volunteers were called up on stage for a snow storm of suds.

“Bringing the kids on stage, I always felt like I was a kid — like I was their friend,” Yang said. “With this new outlook on my life and having a son and bringing kids on stage, now I would still be friendly, I would still be like a friend, but at the same time it will be more educational, teaching them, showing them, explaining to them in a different manner. When you have a child, you teach them what you know, and I feel like that’s come to me more now.”

Bubblefest had to be canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it was revived in July during a COVID-19 lull. It usually is presented in the spring, and is back on its regular schedule this year.

Going it along this year – her brother, Deni, is running the show in New York now – isn’t so unusual, Yang said.

“I did the Australia tour by myself,” she said. “And I run the show in New York sometimes by myself.

“I’ll probably do a few tricks that Deni doesn’t do,” she said about this current run of Bubblefest at the Discovery Cube.

The show also features a variety of bubble-themed activities for the kids to participate in after the performance, which runs through April 17 at Discovery Cube OC, 2500 N. Main St., Santa Ana.
