THE GAME: The Angels lost 6-1 to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Patrick Sandoval gave up three runs in three-plus innings in his first Cactus League game of the spring. He had thrown three innings in a minor league game in his first game. “It felt good,” Sandoval said. “It’s good to actually get in a real big league game. It was fun. I missed it. I realized how much I miss playing the game.” Sandoval worked two scoreless innings, and then gave up a two-run homer to Mauricio Dubon in the third. He started the fourth, hit the leadoff batter, and was then removed. Sandoval was the first Angels starter to work into the fourth inning this spring. … Right-hander AJ Ramos pitched 1-1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, but then came out of the game with an injury. There was no immediate word on the nature or severity of the injury. A veteran with 99 career big league saves, Ramos is a non-roster invite to camp this spring. … Left-hander Brian Moran pitched 1-2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
HITTING REPORT: Shohei Ohtani drew two walks, both against former teammate Alex Cobb. Cobb said that he was thinking about the homer he saw Ohtani hit a day earlier against the Chicago White Sox. “Watching him hit a first-pitch curveball out the other day gets you a little rattled,” Cobb said. … The Angels managed just four hits, a triple by Andrew Velazquez, a double by David Fletcher and singles by Jared Walsh and Brandon Marsh. … The Angels were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Their only run scored after Velazquez tripled and Jack Mayfield drove him in with a groundout in the eighth inning.
DEFENSE REPORT: Second baseman Luis Rengifo, who was positioned in the grass in a shift, charged in and made a nice backhand pickup of a chopper. … First baseman Jared Walsh made a diving stop of a ball headed down the line, saving a run. … Catcher Chad Wallach threw out a runner trying to steal second.
UP NEXT: A’s at Angels, Monday, 1 p.m. PT, Tempe Diablo Stadium, Bally Sports West, 830 AM
