A man was arrested on suspicion of robbing a Costa Mesa bank with help from alert witnesses who provided a detailed description of him on Friday afternoon, Feb. 11, authorities said.

Just before 1:50 p.m., the suspect walked into a bank in the 2300 block of Harbor Boulevard, handed the teller a note and walked out with an undisclosed amount of cash, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Bryan Wadkins said.

Witnesses told officers the man walked out onto Harbor Boulevard and the direction he took, Wadkins said.

Police found the suspect at a construction site shortly thereafter, Wadkins said. He was arrested after the witnesses identified him.

After arresting the suspect, police received a call from another bank in the 2300 block of Harbor Boulevard reporting an attempted bank robbery at 1:40 p.m., Wadkins said.

Investigators were working to determine if the suspect had also attempted to rob that bank, Wadkins said. The man’s identity was being withheld.

Some of the money that was taken was recovered, police said, but the amount wasn’t disclosed. A police official on Saturday declined to identify either bank.
