The high school swimming and diving season begins Saturday, Feb. 19.

Here are updates on teams, players, events, plus key dates during the season.

Season starts: Feb. 19

Overview: A complete, spring season appears on the horizon after the pandemic cut short the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. While traditional, regular-season meets have been scheduled, not everything will return to normal. The CIF Southern Section hasn’t announced a site for its championships but stated that it won’t return to Riverside City College this spring because of vaccination requirements. “We are currently working toward securing venues,” section assistant commissioner and spokesperson Thom Simmons said. “We hope to have the process completed soon and will announce our decision at that time.”

The regular season will be highlighted by the Mission Viejo Invitational on March 19 and the Foothill Swim Games on April 7-9. Most league finals will be held the last week in April.

Santa Margarita’s boys and girls are the reigning CIF Division 1 champions and will be strong again. The Eagles return Register girls swimmer of the year Justina Kozan (USC), junior Macky Hodges and added the top freshman in Orange County in Teagan O’Dell, a rising star with the Novaquatics. The boys are led by the junior trio of Humberto Najera, Allen Cai and Keller Morgan. Laguna Hills returns Register boys swimmer of the year Tona Zinn (Northwestern).
