LOS ALAMITOS >> Playing on the road has proven to be an advantage for the San Clemente boys soccer team this season.

The Tritons came away with their biggest road victory of the season Friday in the first round of the CIF SS Division 1 playoffs against Los Alamitos.

The Tritons scored two late goals for a 5-3 victory over the Griffins in a wide-open, fast-paced game at Los Alamitos High School.

San Clemente (11-3-3), the second-place team out of the South Coast League, will take on Huntington Beach in a second-round game Tuesday at San Clemente.

The Oilers defeated Millikan, 3-0, in a first-round game Friday.

San Clemente’s record on the road is 8-1-1.

“It’s one of the most exciting games I’ve been involved in,” Tritons coach Chris Murray said. “It’s also a good experience for the boys. (Los Alamitos) won the league. They have a very strong program, so to come here was a real stiff test. Hopefully, we get some momentum from this.”

The score was 3-3 when the Tritons’ Timeus Truman scored in the 35th minute of the second half in what turned out to the be winning goal.

“I was going to celebrate, but I was like, ‘guys, we’ve got to calm down and stay in this game because there is a couple of minutes left,’ ” Truman said.

Lucas Echeverria then scored his second goal of the game in the 38th minute of the half to put the game away.

Los Alamitos (9-7-4) struck first in the 19th minute of the contest when Jakob Singh used his speed to dribble down the left side of the field past a defender and shot the ball into the goal from an extremely wide angle.

In the 24h minute, Echeverria dribbled across the middle of the field to get clear shot and kicked the ball over the keeper’s head and into the goal to make the score 1-1.

Nico Kaczmarczyk then scored just before halftime, also shooting from a wide angle, to give the Tritons a 2-1 lead.

Kaczmarczyk’s late first-half goal forced the Griffins into a position of having to play from behind in the second half.

“That was a pivotal moment,” Murray said.

Los Alamitos tied the score twice in the second half on goals from Brian Arens and Derek Lund, but the Tritons answered both times with go-ahead goals from Finn Linus and Truman.
