Rams’ Sean McVay, Aaron Donald sound eager to go for two

Sean McVay and Aaron Donald talked about the future on Wednesday, loudly if not absolutely clearly.

Speculation that the coach and defensive star would walk away from the Rams hung over the parade and rally celebrating the team’s first Super Bowl victory in Los Angeles.

But they eased that worry a bit with playful comments on a microphone during the rally outside the peristyle end of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

Donald was firing up the crowd, saying the Vince Lombardi Trophy is “for you guys,” when Rams radio announcer and event emcee J.B. Long broke in.

“Sean McVay just tapped me on the shoulder,” Long said to Donald. “He wanted to know if you were interested in running it back (trying to repeat the championship).”

“Run it back! Run it back! Run it back!” McVay began chanting as the crowd joined in.

“We built a superteam,” Donald yelled in response. “We bring a superteam back, why not run it back? We can be world champions (again)!”

It wasn’t the moment for definitive statements, particularly since Donald told the crowd, “I’ve been having a little fun (today), so if I slur my words I apologize.”

But this was the closest Donald or McVay has come to promising to stay with the Rams since their 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

McVay, the youngest Super Bowl-winning coach at 36 years, 20 days, had commented Friday about seeking better work-life “balance” as he prepares to get married this summer.

He told a national reporter later that he’s “committed to this team and coaching,” but told a Los Angeles Times columnist, “We’ll see” about whether he coaches in 2022.

Donald, 30, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was reported by NBC’s Rodney Harrison to have said before the Super Bowl that he would consider retiring if the Rams won.

Donald dodged questions about that after the game by saying he was “living in the moment.”

Both Donald and McVay could be seeking contract extensions and raises.

Their comments Wednesday seemed to reassure Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff.

“Aaron said on stage that he wants to run it back, so we’ll take him at his word,” Demoff told reporters after the parade from the Shrine Auditorium and rally attended by thousands in Exposition Park.

“You just saw Sean on stage today. He’s ready to go defend our title,” Demoff said. “I think he was up there encouraging everybody to come back, so I don’t think he was ready to get out.”

To become the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots, the Rams would likely have to hang on to some high-profile free agents, including wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and outside linebacker Von Miller.

“The most important thing, if you want to run it back, is (that) the players want to run it back,” Demoff said. “If you have free agents like Von and Odell and those players, it’s really in their hands.”

Miller told the crowd: “We ain’t goin’ anywhere, man!”

One Rams star who might be going is left tackle Andrew Whitworth, likely to retire at age 40 after winning his first Super Bowl and being voted the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award by the league’s players.

Asked by Long about his future, Whitworth responded, “Oh, you know, we’ll save that conversation for another day.”
