The Rams are bringing back Liam Coen to be offensive coordinator after Kevin O’Connell left the Super Bowl-winning team to become head coach of the Vikings, according to a report.

Coen, 36, was on Rams coach Sean McVay’s staff from 2018 to 2020 as assistant wide receivers coach and assistant quarterbacks coach before leaving to be offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky in 2021.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported Coen’s return to the Rams Monday morning.

O’Connell, the Rams’ offensive coordinator for two seasons, was introduced as the Vikings’ head coach Thursday.

He’s bringing two Rams assistants with him, according to newspaper reports in Minnesota. Rams tight ends coach and passing-game coordinator Wes Phillips will be the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. Chris O’Hara, a low-ranking offensive assistant with the Rams, will be quarterbacks coach with the Vikings.

That brings to at least six the number of Rams assistant coaches leaving for bigger roles with other teams, after Ejiro Evero, Marcus Dixon and Dwayne Stukes went to the Broncos as defensive coordinator, defensive-line coach and special-teams coordinator, respectively, for new Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett.

Coen, who helped Kentucky improve to 10-3 and a No. 18 final ranking, was considered the leading external candidate for the Rams’ offensive-coordinator job after O’Connell left.

The most-discussed internal candidate was Thomas Brown, the Rams’ running-backs coach and assistant head coach. Brown was interviewed by the Dolphins for their head-coach job and the Vikings for offensive coordinator. The Sports Illustrated report said Brown will receive more responsibility in the L.A. offense.

None of the moves has been confirmed by the Rams.

This story will be updated.
