For the second game in a row, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was caught unmasked at a Rams game — the 70,000-attendee Super Bowl — following a trend of powerful California Democrats doing the same.

At the AFC Championship two weeks prior, pictures of an unmasked Garcetti leaked, along with San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

This was not the first time for Breed or Newsom. Breed has been caught out on the town a few times, while Newsom faced a recall election at least partly because of his unmasked, un-socially-distanced dinner at a fancy Wine Country restaurant.

All three have had their respective constituents under masking orders during these incidents. The state was under a masking order that Newsom had implemented until Tuesday.

In being caught violating their own rules, there is an implicit acknowledgement by them that their rules are not necessary and that grown adults can make decisions about their own health and safety.

Yet ironically, these incidents of rank hypocrisy have not caused these politicians to change their behavior.

Newsom said that he had only taken his mask off at the AFC Championship to pose for a quick picture with Lakers legend Magic Johnson, though other photos showed him maskless at other times.

Garcetti, meanwhile, said he just held his breath, which shows how little he thinks of the public.

As the masking mandates fade away for adults, the masking requirement for students remains — even though children have always had far lower risk of serious disease than adults.

In other words, everyday Californians have to follow rules that the powerful politicians who created the rules don’t have to follow. And children, who have the lowest risk of serious infection, have to suffer the most to satisfy the most paranoid among us.

This is beyond parody. The state’s leading Democrats prove time and again that most of these rules are at the very least arbitrary.

With the latest wave on the retreat, broad vaccinations and easy availability of boosters, it’s time to drop arbitrary rules and trust people to make their own choices.
