There’s a cold blast from the past at Taco Bell restaurants in and around the South Bay.

The Irvine-based fast food giant is bringing back the Klondike Choco Taco, an ice cream dessert, for a limited time at 20 locations. Half are in Southern California. The other 10 are in Milwaukee.

Choco Tacos are made with waffle cones shaped like taco shells, filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate coating and peanuts.

The dessert was invented in the 1980s and later picked up by Taco Bell. It was taken off the menu in 2015.

Choco Taco’s brief return, which began Friday, Feb. 18, marks the 100th anniversary of the Klondike ice cream company and the upcoming 60th anniversary of Taco Bell, according to Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s global chief food innovation officer, as quoted in a press release.

The first Taco Bell, known as Numero Uno, opened on March 21, 1962 in Downey. The building was moved to the chain’s Irvine headquarters in 2015.

Here are Southern California locations that are selling Choco Tacos for $2.99 each.
