LOS ANGELES –– The Kings continued their roll by riding a domineering first period to a 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday.

The Kings are now on pace for their first 100-point season since 2015-16.

They swept their back-to-back set, outscoring the Ducks and Islanders 9-3 aggregately. The Kings have now won five straight games and seven of their last eight. They own a seven-game points streak against Eastern Conference opponents and they’ve won more games against the East, 18, than any other Western team. Meanwhile, the Islanders have won just twice in their last eight games.

Defenseman Matt Roy and forward Trevor Moore contributed a goal and an assist apiece. The Kings got goals from centers Phillip Danault and Quinton Byfield as well as winger Brendan Lemieux. Cal Petersen made 26 saves. He has now won nine of his 11 starts since Jan. 8, when he made his first appearance after exiting COVID protocols.

Winger Anders Lee and center Jean-Gabriel Pageau tallied for the Islanders. Defenseman Noah Dobson had two assists. Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 of 34 shots.

The Kings got at least one goal from each of their forward lines.

“We started where we left off last night. We were playing pretty good with all four lines working hard, working together. Our forecheck’s doing really well right now and we’ve got to keep that going,” said defenseman Olli Maatta, who posted a plus-four rating Friday.

The Kings were able to coast through the final frame, drawing two penalties and facing limited offensive pressure from the Islanders until their second goal, which came with 1:16 to play. A Dobson shot through traffic generated a rebound, which Pageau backhanded home. Moore negated that goal with an empty-netter in the dying gasps of the match.

With a mere 28 seconds left in the second period, the Kings reclaimed a three-goal advantage off a rush that ended when Lemieux slipped a shot from the right faceoff dot between Varlamov’s legs. It was his eighth goal of the campaign.

The Islanders prevented the Kings from taking 4-0 lead for the second straight night, scoring 13 seconds prior to the halfway mark of the game. Center Mathew Barzal led the break, slowed it down and then initiated a passing sequence that culminated in Lee’s goal from in tight.

Barzal, the Isles’ leading scorer, would later become entangled with Danault. Barzal required help off the ice and was unable to support weight on his left leg. He returned to the game later in the period, only to go back to the dressing room after one shift.

Islanders defenseman Zdeno Chara, 44, set the record for most career games played by a rearguard on Thursday. But his next game may be in doubt as he too sustained an injury in the second period and did not return.

The Kings had extended their lead to three goals less than one minute into the second stanza off a fortuitous series of bounces. Byfield vied for the faceoff but lost it, then the puck hit multiple Islanders sticks and wound up into the net. Byfield was credited with the goal, his third point of the season and his second in two nights.

For much of the first period, the Kings out-skated the Islanders as if they were playing a video game with their sliders turned up to 100.

“Everybody had an impact on the game,” assistant coach Trent Yawney said. “It was a little bit tougher back-to-back, but I thought the guys really showed some mental toughness being ready from the start to play the way they’re capable of and play to their identity.”

For the second consecutive game, the Kings opened the scoring, and this time they struck again promptly, tallying 3:43 into the game and again just over four minutes later.

First, defenseman Tobias Bjornfot’s stretch pass banked off the wall and onto Trevor Moore’s stick. As Moore fended off a check from behind, he and Viktor Arvidsson criss-crossed near the net, then Moore dished to the trailer Danault, who flicked the puck past Varlamov. Danault’s 15th goal further extended what was already a single-season career high.

Then, buzzing around the Islanders’ zone and switching positions as if they were on a power play, the Kings were rewarded for their effort and creativity. Center Anze Kopitar made a cross-ice pass from the outer edge of the right faceoff circle to Roy, whose one-timer became his first goal of the season.

“I tried to find open ice in the backdoor area. Kopi’s an amazing player so he knew I was there and he made a good play,” said Roy, who was showered with congratulations from Kopitar and other teammates. “Everyone was excited for me and it was a lot of fun.”
