LOS ANGELES — The Kings were back on the job Tuesday night, but they were unable to pick up where they left off before their extended break, falling to the Edmonton Oilers, 5-2, at Crypto.com Arena.

In their first game since Feb. 2, the Kings saw their six-game points streak snapped. Meanwhile, Edmonton improved to 3-0-0 under interim coach Jay Woodcroft.

The Kings were held scoreless on five power-play opportunities, but also successfully killed all four penalties they took.

Winger Arthur Kaliyev and center Phillip Danault scored for the Kings, while Cal Petersen made 24 saves.

Centers Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and winger Kailer Yamamoto scored for Edmonton. Wingers Zach Hyman and Evander Kane each added an empty-net goal, and Mike Smith had 30 saves.

Hyman and Kane scored 67 seconds apart, both into the vacated cage in the waning moments of the match.

Edmonton went ahead for good with 4:46 left in the game. An awkward exchange between Petersen and his defenseman unraveled the Kings’ structure near their net before center Leon Draisaitl sent a pass in front for Yamamoto, who scored confidently.

The Kings had found an equalizer with 8:18 left. Winger Viktor Arvidsson sent a pass from behind the net to a driving Danault, who swiftly sent it past Smith. Danault’s 13 goals matches his career high, which he will assuredly surpass in one of the Kings’ 34 remaining games.

Edmonton earned its first lead of the game 7:44 into the third period when Nugent-Hopkins scored on a follow-up bid from between the circles.

In the second period, the Kings played a controlled, risk-averse game that nearly produced 20 scoreless minutes. But Edmonton drew even with 2:15 remaining when a goalmouth scramble resulted in a goal from close range by McDavid. Initially waived off for goaltender interference, the goal was allowed after a video review.

The Kings essentially bookended the first period with a successful four-minute penalty kill early and the game’s first goal late. Winger Brendan Lemieux picked off the pass of Smith, one of the league’s best puck-handling goalies, and quickly centered it for Kaliyev’s redirection goal with four minutes to play.

DOUGHTY HONORED

Prior to the game, the Kings honored defenseman Drew Doughty with a ceremony commemorating his 1000th game, which he played on the road on Jan. 27 against the New York Islanders. Doughty was joined by Anze Kopitar, Jonathan Quick and Dustin Brown.

Doughty, Kopitar and Brown became the first three teammates in NHL history to play 1,000 or more games together.

Doughty, who had an assist Tuesday, was also the first player from his draft class to hit the 1,000-game mark. The Islanders’ Josh Bailey ranks second (957), followed by Tampa Bay forward and No. 1 overall pick Steven Stamkos (889). All three remain with the franchises that drafted them.

During Tuesday’s video montage, former Kings coach Darryl Sutter said Doughty might have played closer to 1,500 games given his extensive playoff and international experience. Not quite, but since entering the NHL in 2008 Doughty has now played 1,004 regular-season games, 84 playoff games and 28 international matches for Canada, bringing him to a total of 1,116.
