Jaylen Clark is blossoming as UCLA seeks 3rd straight win while facing Arizona State Monday

The daunting stretch of six games in 12 days hasn’t seemed so daunting through the first two games.

UCLA’s margin of victory over Washington State and Washington was 20 and 26, respectively. Tyger Campbell didn’t play Thursday night. Johnny Juzang and Cody Riley didn’t play Saturday night. In the two games, only two players have logged more than 30 minutes, Jaylen Clark (twice) and David Singleton.

Now, the 13th-ranked Bruins will host Arizona State in search of their third straight win at home Monday night in Pauley Pavilion before a three-game road trip to Oregon, Oregon State and Washington that will take the team through Feb. 28.

UCLA (19-5, 11-4 Pac-12) and Arizona State (10-15, 6-9) will tip off at 6 p.m. on FS1 in the second leg of the Pac-12 set. Arizona State edged the Bruins in triple overtime 87-84 on Feb. 5. The Monday night matchup was rescheduled from a Jan. 1 game that was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

“We’re definitely watching the minutes, especially with the stretch we’re on,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said Saturday night.

While Cronin and his staff monitor the minutes – which is why Riley sat out (load management) – UCLA fans are watching Clark blossom in front of their eyes. He notched a career-high 19 points in Thursday’s win then topped himself Saturday with a new career-high of 25. He shot the most on the team, too, going 12 of 16 from the field and taking just two 3-pointers (and making one).

“I feel like everything I’ve done in the dark is starting to come to light,” Clark said.

He also played stellar defense on Washington’s Terrell Brown Jr., the Pac-12’s leading scorer, Saturday night. Clark is doing everything.

“I’ve been telling you guys from the beginning of the year I was going to have a hard time not starting him,” Cronin said Thursday.

Clark’s health has made his availability spotty this season. Now, he’s finally hitting a stride and UCLA is benefitting at the right time.
