WEEKEND STAKES AT SANTA ANITA

Saturday

• $75,000 Wishing Well Stakes, fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up, 6 1/2 furlongs downhill turf course.

DOWN THE STRETCH

• Any questions whether speedster Brickyard Ride could successfully negotiate two turns were erased Monday when the 5-year-old son of Clubhouse Ride cruised to a 7 1/2-length, geared-down victory in the $100,000 Tiznow Stakes at Santa Anita under Juan Hernandez. “I trust a lot in the trainers, and Craig (trainer Craig Lewis) told me, ‘Juan, this horse is doing really good and it should be no problem, the two turns,’” Hernandez said. “So I just trusted him. I had confidence in him because I knew he could do it, and he did it.” Lewis said there’s a chance he could wheel Brickyard Ride back quickly in the Grade II San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita on March 5.

• One of trainer Bob Baffert’s top Kentucky Derby hopefuls, Newgrange, drew the No. 2 post and was installed as the 9-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s $1 million Grade II Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, the major prep for the Arkansas Derby on April 2. Baffert’s horses are ineligible to run in the next two Kentucky Derbies following the disqualification of the 2021 winner, Medina Spirit, but none of the owners of his top Derby hopefuls, including Messier, have given an indication if or when they will transfer their colts to a different trainer. The Rebel, run at 1 1/16 miles, drew a field of 11.

• Mandaloun, named the official winner of last May’s Kentucky Deby on Monday after the disqualification of Medina Spirit, will start from the No. 6 post in Saturday’s $20 million Saudi Cup. The 1 1/8-mile race features horses from seven countries, including last year’s winner, Mishriff, who will break from the outside post in the 14-horse field. Japan’s Marche Lorraine, winner of last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar, is entered and will start from post No. 13. The race, scheduled for a 9:40 a.m. PT start, will be televised by Fox Sports 2. The network will also cover the undercard, beginning at 5 a.m.
