Jeremy Giambi, a former MLB player and a star at South Hills High who played six seasons in Major League Baseball, died Wednesday at age 47.

Giambi, born in San Jose, died at his parents’ home in Claremont, agent Joel Wolfe told reporters.  Giambi played in the majors from 1998 to 2003 with the Kansas City Royals, A’s, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox before his retirement. Giambi was also a standout at Cal State Fullerton, winning a College World Series title with the team in 1995

Claremont police Lt. Robert Ewing said officers responded to a medical emergency call at 11:40 a.m. and found Giambi dead inside the home. The cause of death was unknown, but Ewing said there were no signs of foul play.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of a member of our Green and Gold family, Jeremy Giambi. We offer our condolences to Janne, Jason and his family and friends.”

Giambi’s brother, Jason Giambi, played eight seasons with the A’s — including the 2000 and 2001 seasons in Oakland with Jeremy. The A’s traded Jeremy to the Phillies in May of 2002.

“This is devastating news. Jeremy was a big supporter of our program and now we will be here to support the family at this difficult time,” said Darren Murphy, South Hills athletic director and baseball coach.

Former MLB pitcher Brett Myers, a teammate of Giambi’s with the Phillies, shared his condolences on Twitter:

“You were a great teammate and a fun guy to have in the clubhouse! My prayers go out to the family and friends!”
