Former major league outfielder Jeremy Giambi, found dead on Wednesday at his parents’ Claremont home, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said on Friday, Feb. 11.

Claremont police responded to a medical emergency about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday and found the 47-year-old dead.

Giambi attended South Hills High in West Covina and Cal State Fullerton, where he won the College World Series with the Titans in 1995. The baseball uniform number he and brother Jason wore in high school, 7, was retired by the school in 2015.

Jeremy Giambi, born in San Jose, played in the majors from 1998 to 2003 with the Kansas City Royals, the Oakland A’s, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox. He played the outfield, first base and designated hitter, batting .263 with 52 home runs and 209 RBI over his career. He also hit .318 in nine playoff games.
