Eli Tomac has a chance to achieve a rather rare result for the Yamaha factory Supercross team when the AMA dirt bike series makes its third and final appearance of the season Saturday night at Angel Stadium.

Should he win the main event in Anaheim, Tomac would become the first Yamaha rider to win three consecutive races since James Stewart finished first in rounds two through eight during his title-winning season in 2009.

What would make this result even more impressive for Tomac is it would come in just his sixth race aboard his new YZ450F.

Tomac has been nothing short of dominant during the past two events. When the series was last in Anaheim two weeks ago, he won both his heat race and the main event. And last weekend in Glendale, Ariz., he won two of the three motos during the triple-crown race to claim the overall title at State Farm Stadium, giving him an 11-point lead in the rider standings over Chase Sexton.

Tomac has finished no worse than second in his past three starts, and the last time he was in Angel Stadium, he turned in the fastest heat race lap.

Sexton is doing his best to keep the championship battle close. He won the final moto last weekend in Glendale, Ariz., preventing Tomac from completing the clean sweep. Sexton placed third overall in the triple crown event, his sixth podium in 16 career starts.

When the series last visited Anaheim, Sexton was only one point behind his Yamaha rival, and seven points separated first place from eighth, where Malcolm Stewart was sitting.

But after turning in a career-best finish last weekend, placing second overall, the Husqvarna factory rider is in fourth place in the championship race. However, he’s now 18 points behind Tomac. A victory Saturday night, though, is worth 26 points, and could predict who the champion will be.

This is the 14th time that the series has held a third race in Anaheim, and nine times the rider who won the Angel Stadium finale went on to own the No. 1 plate. Ryan Dungey was the last to do it in 2015.
