HUNTINGTON BEACH — An 11-day break couldn’t slow Edison’s special boys basketball season Tuesday night.

Neither could a mid-major, college recruit who averages about 26 points.

Trey Wilborn scored 18 points and fellow senior forward added Tyler Hampton 13 as the No. 2-seeded Chargers resumed their winning ways with a well-balanced 75-57 victory against visiting Elsinore in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs.

Playing for the first time since clinching an undefeated Surf League title on Feb. 3, Edison (25-4) led Sunbelt League co-champion Elsinore (21-6) wire-to-wire behind its fastbreak, 3-point shooting and defense against guard Tore Gray.

The defensive combination of point guard Quinn Delaney, and well-timed double-teams, helped hold Gray to three points and without a field goal.

“We played outstanding,” Edison coach Rich Boyce said. “My biggest fear was the layoff. It’s just a long time, so I was a little nervous about that. We tried to keep everything competitive in practice and I think it paid off. At least we advanced and we get to survive and we get to play one more game at least.”

Edison will be the visiting team Friday against emerging rival Pacifica Christian, a 63-51 winner against Lakewood.

The Chargers will certainly take another defensive performance like Tuesday. Their man-to-man defense disrupted Gray and Elsinore. Gray, coming off a 36-point performance against Price of Los Angeles in the first round, didn’t score in the first period and had one point at halftime.

“Quinn took him out of his game a little bit,” Boyce said. “He stayed up on him, never led him loose. That’s a credit to him and his effort.”

Edison also held the Tigers to four points, including one field goal, in the second period to en route to a 34-20 lead at halftime.

Delaney said his strategy against Gray was to keep the senior in front of him but not get too close on his crossover move. Edison also applied a double team on Elsinore’s pick-and-roll.

“I knew if would take him out, then they wouldn’t be doing that well,” Quinn said. “We like being hard-nosed. We like playing hard-nosed, physical. That’s how we win games.”

Edison also offered a blend of speed and 3-point shooting on offense. Elsinore’s offensive struggles fueled the Chargers’ fastbreak, which led to a pair of two-handed dunks by Hampton and several of the Chargers’ nine 3-pointers.

Delaney sank a 3-pointer in the second quarter during an 8-0 run that opened the score. Wilborn drilled another 3-pointer in the corner with three seconds left in the half.

Edison sank four 3-pointers in the third period, including two by sophomore Kaz Hampton, no relation to Tyler Hampton.

“We have great team chemistry,” Wilborn said, “especially this game because the way they play defense and their 1-2-2 (zone). We move the ball around and their defense breaks down and easy buckets.”

Edison guard Dylan Hugues and forward Tucker Tripp — two juniors — added eight and five points, respectively.
