Mike McDaniel brings a sharp offensive mind and comes from a healthy coaching tree of Mike and Kyle Shanahan. He’s also not the kind of first-time hire to get overly excited about — unless you did similar offensive minds and first-time hires Joe Philbin and Adam Gase. This team needs some good news and the hope is McDaniel brings it.

Young, hungry and innovative is Steve Ross’ style when it comes to hiring individuals to run his companies, so the selection of Mike McDaniel isn’t surprising. He comes from a team that featured a physical rushing attack, and plays the style of football I believe wins in the NFL when your team lacks an elite quarterback. Let’s just hope that unlike Ross’ past hires McDaniel will do a better job putting together a quality staff.

The young, upstart offensive wiz is the Dolphins’ new head coach. McDaniel will certainly bring a lot more personality to the role than it had under previous coach Brian Flores, and it should be a fun, upbeat team. The 38-year-old first-time head coach will have to hire a strong staff to support him as he doesn’t have play-calling experience as offensive coordinator. He is a run-game mastermind, which should help with the Dolphins’ among the worst in the league in that area last season, but he also hasn’t worked with quarterbacks. He’ll need the right assistants to help develop Tua Tagovailoa. We also are unsure how he’ll fare commanding the respect of a locker room from a lead role, but only time will tell.

Yes, Steve Ross continues the franchise’s 17-year streak of hiring coaches with no previous NFL head coaching experience, but McDaniel has a different feel than the others, from Nick Saban to Cam Cameron to Tony Sparano to Joe Philbin to Adam Gase to Brian Flores. He seems at ease when communicating to a group, and also comes from the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree, which has seen excellent results the past few years.
