The Memphis Grizzlies really have the Clippers’ number this season.
To be fair, at 38-18, Memphis has much of the league figured out.
The Clippers, though, for certain.
With Tuesday’s 135-109 victory at FedExForum, Ja Morant and Co. improved to 4-0 against Coach Tyronn Lue’s squad this season.
The Clippers (27-29) were mostly listless, undisciplined and outmatched Tuesday, when they gave up 120-plus points to the Grizzlies for the fourth time this season and more than 130 points for the second time in as many games.
Memphis outscored the Clippers 78-46 in the paint and 22-8 in transition.
“We wasn’t physical enough,” Lue said. “You could see it. We have to do a better job. I know we can do it, but for some reason, this team they’re definitely more physical.”
Morant, voted an All-Star starter for the first time this season, finished with 30 points in 26 minutes – the ninth time in the last 10 games that the electric 22-year-old guard has scored at least 30.
The Clippers didn’t have an answer for Jaren Jackson Jr, either. The forward, also 22 years old, scored 26 points in 26 minutes and set a career high with eight offensive rebounds – all coming in the first half.
After scoring a team-high 28 points in his Clippers debut Sunday, Norman Powell played only 23 minutes, with the game getting out of hand quickly in the second half, and finished with 16 on Tuesday, 10 of which he scored in the first four minutes.
Powell arrived from Portland along with Robert Covington in a trade Friday that sent out Eric Bledsoe, Keon Johnson, Justise Winslow and a second-round draft pick in 2025.
Covington had 14 points Tuesday – which pushed him over 6,000 for his career – for the Clippers, who were led by Isaiah Hartenstein, who had a season-high 19 points in a losing effort.
Marcus Morris Sr. was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected in the third quarter after he knocked a driving Morant backward onto the hardwood. Morris finished with three points in 22 minutes on 1-for-6 shooting.
