FULLERTON — The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team came into Saturday with the second-worst 3-point shooting percentage (29.3) in the Big West Conference.
The Titans didn’t seem to give that much thought, shooting 12 for 22 from behind the arc in a 75-61 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at Titan Gym.
Damari Milstead shot 5 for 6 on 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Fullerton. Latrell Wrightsell Jr. was 2 for 5 from long distance and scored 15 points, and Tray Maddox Jr. was 3 for 4 from beyond the 3-point line and scored 13 points for the Titans (14-6 overall, 7-1 Big West).
“I thought we really played from the inside out,” Fullerton coach Dedrique Taylor said.
The win, coupled with Hawaii’s second straight loss, kept the Titans in a tie for first in the Big West with Long Beach State (12-9, 7-1), which hosts Fullerton on Tuesday night.
“It’s a great opportunity for this ballclub, and I think it’s a tell-tell sign of who this group is trying to be,” Taylor said. “Everyone is saying it’s a lot of pressure. I think there’s no pressure. Go out and do what you’ve done to earn the spot that you’re in right now. If we can do that, I like our chances.”
Fullerton shot 7 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half to open a 36-25 lead by halftime.
Bakersfield (6-11, 1-6) started 5 for 6 from the floor in a 74-65 loss at Long Beach on Thursday, but missed its first seven shots against the Titans, allowing the hosts to build an early 7-0 lead.
Wrightsell Jr. made his first two 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to stretch the lead to 10-2.
Maddox sank a deep 3-pointer for the Titans to make it 18-10, and Jalen Harris made a 3-pointer in transition off a steal by Maddox for a 21-10 advantage with 9:24 left in the first half.
The Roadrunners scored six straight points to cut the lead to 21-16, but Milstead drilled two more 3-pointers to stretch the lead back to 11 with 4:49 remaining in the half.
Fullerton leading scorer E.J. Anosike (17.3 ppg) missed his first five shots and was scoreless until converting a three-point play for a 34-22 advantage with 2:13 left, the Titans’ biggest lead of the first half.
Anosike grabbed nine of his 13 rebounds in the first half.
“That was a big part of the game, in terms of how physical Bakersfield is,” Taylor said. ”Their best offense is throw it on the glass and go get it, and they did that tonight, but our guys responded.”
Milstead made two 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half, and Tory San Antonio made another to extend Fullerton’s lead to 45-29.
Anosike followed with back-to-back jumpers to move the Titans ahead 53-31 and they coasted from there.
