UCLA has announced Bill McGovern as the new defensive coordinator on coach Chip Kelly’s staff.
McGovern has close to 40 years of coaching experience at both the college and NFL level. He replaces Jerry Azzinaro, who worked in the role since Kelly was hired in 2017.
Azzinaro had reportedly resigned in January, according to multiple reports but the university never made an official announcement.
Azzinaro became the last of Kelly’s three coordinators to leave the program. McGovern’s hiring is the fifth coaching vacancy on the staff filled this offseason.
Offensive coordinator Justin Frye was hired by Ohio State and special teams coordinator Derek Sage was hired as Nevada’s offensive coordinator.
Most of the coaching movement happened as Kelly finished the final days of Year 4 of a five-year contract in January. The Bruins provided Kelly a vote of convenience, following his first winning season at the helm, and agreed to a 4-year contract extension.
