A call for medical help was made at 4:05 p.m. regarding a man down in the stadium’s Lot L and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, said Lt. Geoffrey Meeks with the Inglewood Police Department. The man, 40-year-old Daniel Luna, was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and was rushed to the emergency room, Meeks said.
Police did not become aware of the incident until the hospital’s emergency medical personnel contacted them at 6:30 p.m. due to the severity of Luna’s condition, Meeks said. Luna was then put into a medically induced coma, Meeks said.
Detectives responded and determined that Luna’s injuries were consistent with an assault victim, Meeks said.
Luna was wearing a San Francisco 49ers jersey and black pants at the time of the incident, Meeks said. However, there was not yet evidence to determine if Luna’s fandom was a factor in the apparent attack, Meeks said.
The 49ers were playing the Los Angeles Rams at the time of the assault.
No suspect information was immediately available and no arrests had been made, the lieutenant said. Police were reviewing stadium security camera footage and working with the stadium security team, Meeks said.
Luna traveled to the game alone, CBS Los Angeles reported.
A statement from a 49ers spokesperson, according to CBS LA, said: “What happened to Daniel Luna is reprehensible, and we strongly condemn all violence. We know local authorities are conducting a full investigation and we’re here to support them however we can. Our thoughts and prayers go to Mr. Luna, his family, friends, and the medical team providing him care.”
The 2011 beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow outside Dodger Stadium, leaving Stow in a medically-induced coma and with brain damage, earlier highlighted the issue of fan safety.
