Whittier Christian is seeking a new football coach after removing fourth-year coach Brett Esslinger, athletic director Steve Rojas confirmed Wednesday.
Rojas said there was no “animosity” toward Esslinger, who remains a teacher and assistant basketball coach at the school, but the Heralds wanted to move in a different direction.
The private school in La Habra will be part of a new football-only conference for small schools in the fall. The conference, Rojas said, will divide about 25 schools across four leagues based on their strength. The Heralds will be in the second-to-lowest division for the first two-year cycle, Rojas added.
Whittier Christian went 6-25 under Esslinger, including a 2-6 record this past season. The Heralds, formerly part of the Olympic League, last posted a winning record in 2016.
