People are gathering this morning at a memorial service to honor Jonathan Flagler, the firefighter who died battling a house fire in Rancho Palos Verdes earlier this month, in Los Alamitos on Friday, Jan. 21.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department is hosting the service for Flagler at 10 a.m. at Cottonwood Church in Los Alamitos. Flagler, 47, of San Clemente, died after battling the blaze on Jan. 6.
The service was to be live-streamed on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.
Flagler leaves behind his wife Jenny and their two sons, Brody and Jack.
He was among other crew members from Fire Station 83 that responded to the fire at around 2 a.m. on Tarapaca Road. He became overcome with smoke and fire while inside the home and issued a Mayday alert, officials said. Flagler died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Flagler was a firefighter for 21 years, serving 19 years with the Vernon Fire Department before coming to the Los Angeles County Fire Department in October 2020.
He was a “devoted husband, father, uncle, friend, and hero. He was a highly respected and esteemed LACoFD firefighter who truly embodied our core values of courage, caring, commitment, community, integrity, and teamwork while on- and off-the job,” the Fire Department said in a statement. “(He) will be tremendously missed by all of us – and we will never forget him.”
