Jada Ward made 12 saves and Genoa Rossi and Olivia Krotts each scored twice to help Mater Dei’s girls water polo team upset Orange Lutheran 6-4 in a Trinity League match Thursday at Santiago Canyon College.
The USC-bound Ward recorded two of her saves late in regulation as the Monarchs (7-3, 1-0), ranked sixth in Division 1, knocked off the No. 2 Lancers (8-5, 1-1).
Indiana-commit Grace Klinger added four steals to help lead Mater Dei’s defense.
The Monarchs pulled the surprise after dropping matches to Los Alamitos (8-7) and Foothill (10-7) on Saturday. They also cooled off Orange Lutheran, which beat Laguna Beach 15-14 on Saturday behind seven goals by UCLA-bound Anna Pearson.
Mater Dei plays host to defending league champion Santa Margarita next Thursday in another match with league title ramifications.
Orange Lutheran plays Santa Margarita on Feb. 3.
In the Surf League:
Laguna Beach 12, Los Alamitos 11: Center Charlotte Riches scored five goals and Ava Houlahan added four as the Breakers (13-2, 1-1) held off the Griffins (1-1 in league) at Corona del Mar. Sofia Munatones scored four goals and Livvie Ouellette added three for Los Alamitos.
Newport Harbor 8, Corona del Mar 3: USC-bound attacker Morgan Netherton scored five goals to lead the Sailors (11-1, 3-0) at Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings dropped to 0-3 in league.
