Airlines announced on Monday, Jan. 17 the cancellation of dozens of flights connecting Southern California to the eastern U.S., as a powerful winter storm wreaks havoc on the North Atlantic region.

As many as 35 flights that were supposed to arrive or depart from Los Angeles International Airport this week were grounded as of Monday evening, according to the air traffic monitoring website FlightAware. Another 22 coming to and from John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana were also called off.

Washington D.C., New York, North Carolina, Illinois and Iowa were some of the intended destinations of canceled flights that were supposed to leave from Southern California. Those areas are in the path of a winter storm that covered some neighborhoods with over a foot of snow and drenched others with freezing rain on Monday.

Meteorologists expect the storm to continue hammering the northeastern U.S. through Monday evening and into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
