Coronavirus weekend totals: 22,945 new cases reported in Orange County

The OC Health Care Agency reported 22,945 new cases of the coronavirus over the weekend, increasing the cumulative total since tracking began in the county to 397,805 as of Monday, Jan. 10.

On average, the weekend totals equal about 7,648 cases per day.

The county has reported at least 5,000 or more cases each day during the last two weeks.

The county dashboard’s variant tracking shows that the omicron variant is the majority of cases that have been sequenced. The most recent update is as of Jan. 2. The chart below shows the variants by disease week.

On Monday, 964 people, up from 779 on Jan.7, were reported hospitalized with COVID-19 in Orange County, including 140 patients in intensive care units. A year ago on Jan. 10, Orange County had 2,221 people hospitalized with the coronavirus.

The county reported two more deaths as of Monday, increasing the count of those who have died from the virus in Orange County to 5,908.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Dec. 31.

Of the 5,908 deaths reported from the virus, 1,221 were skilled nursing facility residents, 647 were in assisted living facilities, two were O.C. jail inmates and 19 were listed as homeless.

It is estimated 312,924 people have recovered from the virus. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
