Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Dominique Ruedaflores, Ramona Convent: The senior leads the CIF Southern Section in goals scored with 26 and has notched a goal in every game for Ramona Convent (10-3-1). Last week she scored three goals and had an assist in a 5-0 win over Alhambra, and scored twice in a 4-0 win over Maranatha. Ruedaflores opened the season with six goals in a 13-1 rout of Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary.

Taliyah McFerson, Orange Lutheran: The 5-foot-10 forward averaged 15.5 points in the first two games of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions and earned MVP honors after the Lancers defeated Mira Costa 45-40 in the Green Division final.

Mariah Overby, Mayfair: The 5-foot-7 guard/post player averaged 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds to lead the Monsoons (7-3) to the Larry Doyle Memorial Tournament title game at Marina High. Overby scored 18 points with seven rebounds in the final, a 68-47 loss to St. Paul. Against Tesoro, she had 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals in a 63-62 victory.

Aaliyah Garcia, Canyon: Garcia led Canyon in scoring while helping the Cowboys win three games in a tournament in Arizona. She scored 18, 20 and 12 points, respectively, which earned the Cowboys a 12-3 record heading into this week. Garcia is averaging 10.7 points, 4.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game this season.

Isabella Iniguez, Etiwanda: Iniguez had a goal and an assist as the Eagles defeated Orange Lutheran 3-0 in the championship game of the inaugural SilverLakes Winter Classic. The senior midfielder converted a penalty shot to help Etiwanda double its lead during the 59th minute. In the final minute, Iniguez whipped a corner into the box, and Brooklyn Antonucci headed the ball in for the exclamation point on the victory.

Mia Minestrella, Redondo: Minestrella was selected MVP of the South Holiday Tournament after leading Redondo to the championship. Minestrella, the Daily Breeze player of the year last season, has led the way as Redondo has started this season undefeated.
