Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Buckley DeJardin, St. Francis: The 6-foot-5 senior, who is committed to Carnegie Mellon University, scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 54-34 nonleague win over La Cañada. The Golden Knights are off to a solid start with a 10-2 record.

Shaun Fabisiak, Pacifica: The 6-foot-2 wing averaged nearly 20 points, eight rebounds and played strong defense to lead the Mariners to a 4-0 week, highlighted by winning the Loara Tournament. Fabisiak scored 30 points in the final and was selected tournament MVP.

Jeremy Dent-Smith, Serra: Dent-Smith scored 21 points Tuesday in a 69-62 win over Mayfair as the Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals of the Dwan Hurt Holiday Classic. Dent-Smith also eclipsed 1,000 career points at Serra. He had 21 points Saturday in a win over El Segundo.

Jared McCain, Centennial: McCain, a 6-foot-3 point guard, averaged 27 points per gams as the Huskies won both of their game at the prestigious Hoophall Central Classic in South Dakota. He registered 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists in Centennial’s 64-31 victory over Totino-Grace (Findley, Minn.). McCain followed with 31 points and five 3-pointers as the Huskies posted an 81-62 victory over Bellevuwe West (Washington). Centennial is the No. 1 seed at next week’s Classic at Damien.

Nicholas Sahakian, St. John Bosco: The freshman romped to the 220-pound title at the Reno Tournament of Champions, conquering six foes from four states to lead the Braves to a fourth-place finish. Sahakian registered two pins and two major decisions en route to his second tournament title of the season. He was MVP of the Westminster Tournament.
