The possibility was looming, and now it’s certain.
UCLA’s men’s basketball contest against Washington on Sunday afternoon in Seattle has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Huskies’ program.
Washington’s game with Arizona, which was scheduled for Thursday, was canceled Wednesday just before the fifth-ranked Bruins beat Colorado 73-61 in its conference opener at Pauley Pavilion.
“It’s a shame. It seems to be becoming a problem. NBA guys that are dealing with it,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said Wednesday night. “As much as we all want to turn the page, I keep seeing these NBA guys pop up (with COVID-19) and they’re all vaccinated. It’s a concern.”
The Pac-12 game between the Bruins and Huskies will not be rescheduled. The conference’s policy for contests impacted by COVID-19 says if the two programs cannot mutually agree on a reschedule date, the team impacted by COVID-19 will forfeit the contest.
That means UCLA will be given a conference victory and be 2-0. However, per NCAA policy, there will be no adjustment to overall records. The Bruins stay at 7-1.
